There is no cost involved for schools to participate, but numbers in the webinar will be limited.

Using Scratch, this activity gives you the steps to code a clock that reflects the current time of your location with the hour, minute and second hands.

And then the fun part – every hour the clock face will change to something of your choosing for a short time before returning back to normal. This could be your face, an emoji, your cat…anything!

In the example provided, an emoji and a very happy child has been selected for the clock faces.

This program uses a range of coding techniques in Scratch including show and hide, sprites and costumes, and control and operator blocks.

The Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) will run two series of comedy scriptwriting workshops this year. Open to schools Australia-wide and pitched at Year 5 and 6 students, each series of three workshops is generously supported by Department of Education and Training.

Conducted via Zoom video conference software, ACMI education staff will introduce students to the sketch comedy genre and walk them through the scriptwriting process. Students will collaborate with others from around the country, and will be guided in using the Sketch-o-Matic website – a digital sketch comedy writing tool inspired by the You’re Skitting Me television series.

The video conference sessions will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30pm – 2:15pm AEST on the following dates:

• Series 1 – June 6, 13 and 20.
• Series 2 – August 1, 8 and 15.

This virtual learning opportunity links to content in a number of Australian Curriculum learning areas, including:

Digital Technologies

Plan, create and communicate ideas and information, including collaboratively online, applying agreed ethical, social and technical protocols. (ACTDIP022)

• Developing a set of ‘rules’ about appropriate conduct, language and content when communicating online, and using these rules as a basis for resolving ethical dilemmas.
• Using a range of communication tools to share ideas and information, for example participating in collaborative online environments.

Drama

Rehearse and perform devised and scripted drama that develops narrative, drives dramatic tension, and uses dramatic symbol, performance styles and design elements to share community and cultural stories and engage an audience. (ACADRM037)

What has code got to do with art?

Artists excel at finding innovative ways to use available materials and tools. Traditional materials – like paint, stone, clay and film – all have unique properties and processes to which the artist adds their own stamp to express ideas. Coding is a tool of the digital age. Like traditional art tools it has its own and characteristics and can be used to understand, to communicate and to create new things. The language of code is a language of logic, mathematics, problem solving and computational thinking, but also a language that invites creativity in its application.

In NGV’s Art/Code/Create workshops students learn the basics of Scratch – a free visual programming language – through projects inspired by works of art from the NGV Collection.

ePotential supports teachers to develop their confidence and capability to incorporate digital technologies into their practice.

The ePotential resource includes:

• online surveys – teaching, non-teaching and special settings
• a continuum
• links to practical, teacher generated resources, aligned to the continuum

The redeveloped ePotential: Digital Learning Survey questions have been informed by the:

• previous ePotential Survey questions and Continuum
• AITSL Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
• Victorian Curriculum: Technologies and ICT General Capability and
• UNESCO ICT Competency Standards for Teachers.

The respondent’s answers will place them on a phase along the ePotential Continuum for each key area depending on their level of integration of digital technologies into their teaching and learning.
