Carrum PS Digitech Conference 2017:  ‘A Student Showcase’

The Digitech Conference 2017 will be a day of dynamic exploration and discovery for students and teachers.
Digitech Conference 2017 is a FREE event for schools, developed by the Northern Peninsula Digital Technology Teachers Network.

This Conference is designed as an interactive program for students and teachers.

Students and Teachers will:

• Discover and Experience Microsoft HoloLens with Trent Ray (Microsoft Learning Consultant)
• Explore self-guided game making with Code Camp
• Experience ‘hands on’ activities using a wide selection of Robotics and 3D Printers supplied by Modern Teaching Aids
• Experience ‘hands on’ action in a variety of workshops conducted by Students, showcasing great Digitech activities. Workshop sessions include: Mindstorms EV3 programming, Scratch Gaming Arcade, Sphero Programming, mBot Programming, RoboCup Junior (robot dancing), Blue-Bots (programming by Prep Students), Micro: bit programming, Raspberry Pi demonstrations, Augmented Reality with Aurasma, App Making with Code.Org, Explain Everything App creation, Restart Project: re-cycling RC Cars & Laptops, Create Virtual School Tours with Google My Maps, Drone programming, Touch Cast (video making with Green Screen), LittleBits electronic experiments, and many more!

The Education in Games Summit (#EiGS17) showcases best practice implementation of games and their positive impact on student learning. Exploring, understanding, critiquing and making games provides students powerful skills and capabilities to take them into the future. The summit aims to empower teachers to inspire students to navigate and develop greater learning challenges.

Keynote speaker Eric Jordan (CEO of Codename Entertainment)  kicks off the day demonstrating how profoundly applicable game development skills are right across the modern jobs market. #EiGS17 is created by ACMI, Creative Victoria and the Department of Education and Training, as part of Melbourne International Games Week alongside a range of activities highlighting and advancing Melbourne’s vibrant video games culture and its internationally renowned games development industry.

The Department is currently updating its eduSTAR Secondary School Software Suite to provide Victorian government secondary schools with comprehensive, up-to-date digital tools and software to support the implementation of the Victorian Curriculum and achievement of Education State targets.

During Term 3, 2017, Victorian government secondary schools were provided with access to 20 seats (licences) of the latest version of Sibelius. These are perpetual licences (do not expire) with one year of upgrades and support provided.

Sibelius 
Sibelius is considered one of the world’s foremost music composition teaching resources. It leads the market in overall software functionality and support infrastructure. Music teachers who incorporate Sibelius into their lessons are able to demonstrate music theory and composition concepts, and students are able to create their own pieces of music while developing their understanding of these concepts.

This software can be used to support the implementation of Victorian Curriculum: Arts – Music.

Sibelius software is required for creating and submitting an assessment for VCE Music Performance – Unit 2. Key skills that the unit teaches for composition is to input and edit work using digital technologies, software and equipment and for improvisation it is to record and edit the improvised performance using digital technologies, software and equipment.

Meet the presenter: Katie Wardrobe, Midnight Music

Katie Wardrobe is a music technology trainer, consultant, blogger and podcaster who is passionate about helping music teachers through her business Midnight Music (www.midnightmusic.com.au). She runs hands-on workshops, presents regularly at conferences and she offers online training and support to music teachers all over the world through her music technology professional development community – the Midnight Music Community. Katie is also the host of the Music Tech Teacher podcast.

#MissMakesCode is being run by the Girl Geek Academy and is targeted at Early Primary Years’ Teachers wanting to inspire young girls to use Digital Technologies.

This fun and engaging event will feature:

• explicit teaching activities for visible thinking, problem solving
• GUI design so that young girls are able to.
• utilising iPad Apps to teach and hone skills
• understanding algorithms and coding structures of sequence, selection and iteration (loops)
• techniques for testing and debugging
• encouraging girls to work in a variety of computational ways to solve problems and create apps/games via coding
• catering for morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea

Swinburne University will be holding a NAO workshop for students over the Term 3/4 school holidays.  NAO robotics course is designed to introduce students to programming and enable them to work closely with these robots. Students will be introduced to motion and sonar sensors, voice recognition and sound and vision tracking through hands-on practical activities which will bring the NAO robots to life. 

What is NAO?

NAO is a little character with a unique combination of hardware and software: it consists of sensors, motors and software driven by a dedicated operating system. NAO gets its magic from its programming and animation.

The workshop will be run over 3 days (9-3pm) on the 4,5,6 October at Swinburne.
