Digital Literacy School Grants

Round 2 of the Digital Literacy School Grants (DLSG) initiative is now open. Digital Literacy School Grants is an initiative under the Inspiring all Australians in Digital Literacy and STEM measure of the National Innovation and Science Agenda.Logo

Grants of between $10,000 and $50,000 are available for schools and other organisations to encourage and facilitate implementation of the new Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies. Grants will be awarded for project proposals that demonstrate innovative methods for driving enhanced digital literacy in schools. Grants of amounts greater than $50,000 may also be made where a project has demonstrated capacity to reach regional, national or sectoral scalabilities such as projects involving clusters of schools and/or peak bodies/professional associations.
Grant proposals must:

  • Focus on school−based activities or programs that support school leaders and teachers to understand and implement the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies on a whole of school basis, and/or
  • Engage students with the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies.

The second funding round closes at 12 noon (Canberra time) on Friday 11 August 2017.

Professional Learning with Conrad Wolfram

What skills do young people need in the era of computers and automation?

Conrad Wolfram physicist, mathematician and technologist, is Strategic Director and European Co-Founder/CEO of the Wolfram Group of companies. The Conrad WolframWolfram Group is driving innovation across data science, modelling and maths through technology and solutions. This includes the highly regarded Wolfram Mathematica, Wolfram Alpha Pro,  SystemModeler and Wolfram Programming Lab – available to all Victorian Secondary Schools.

Conrad is also widely known for his thought leadership in reforming education using modern technology. He founded computerbasedmath.org to fundamentally rethink and rebuild the mainstream maths education curriculum, introduce computational thinking and combine with coding how computers can be assumed. The resulting major change is now a worldwide force in re-engineering STEM.

Conrad Wolfram is visiting as a guest of the Department of Education and Training through Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership.

Wycheproof P-12, North to Alaska

Wycheproof P-12 utilises virtual learning tools everyday to enhance and provide for the needs of their students.  Yr 3 & 4 classroom teacher, Miss Amy Cozens has been connecting her students most weeks via the DET Polycom Network to the 4th grade class, at Airport Heights Elementary school in Anchorage, Alaska.

Students have been integrating this program into their English and Integrated Studies classes using oral communication to share happenings in their local area and talk about what it is like to live and go to school in Australia and Alaska. Students have been sharing their favourite sports and activities and have been very interested in the different animals that we have in Australia compared to Alaska. Often the students in Anchorage have to stay inside during recess and lunchtimes as there are Moose in the playground, whereas in Wycheproof we have Kangaroos, Emus and Snakes often in our playground.

After the students in Alaska get back from their summer break, we hope to establish a ‘pen pal’ type program between the students as well. Whether we use more modern technology (e-mails) or more a traditional style is still yet to be determined!

Research launch pad for teachers


 

The State Library of Victoria’s Research Launch Pad for teachers is a free online, self-paced module which takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. It is designed to assist teachers in structuring research tasks in the classroom.

The module guides teachers through the research process offering strategies to explicitly teach students how to define their task, locate information, select resources, organise their notes, present ideas and evaluate their work.

Teachers will find a wealth of classroom resources which can be revisited even after the module has been completed.

The State Library of Victoria’s education team have included lots of short videos to demonstrate how to approach different tasks. Although this PD was designed to complement the Research Launch Pad program for year 7 students, any teacher or teacher Librarian is eligible to apply for free registration.

Both the student program and Teacher Professional learning module have been made possible through a generous philanthropic donation.

Being able to track who completes the teacher modules enables the State Library team to understand the reach of this resource and through completion of a short survey, understand potential  impact on student learning.
