SOLO Taxonomy- ‘in the Classroom’ and ‘Master Class’

Pam Hook returns to Victoria for an exciting offer of SOLO workshops: ‘SOLO Taxonomy in the Classroom’ and ‘SOLO Master Class’, a new offering for educators who have previously attended the ‘in your Classroom’ workshop. Pam Hook is one of the leading advocates for the SOLO taxonomy and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to share.

SOLO Taxonomy in the Classroom aims to provide schools with further tools, ideas and practical strategies to help teachers plan and implement the SOLO taxonomy in their classrooms.

The SOLO Master Class is designed for educators who have previously attended the ‘SOLO Taxonomy in the Classroom’ workshop. This workshop will equip attendees with further tools, ideas and practical strategies to support learning design.

The SOLO Taxomomy (Biggs & Collis 1982) has provided a valuable vehicle to identify and support deep learning opportunities in many NPDL schools. It has shown the relationship between surface and deep learning and the importance of scaffolding learning for both.

Digital Technologies Workshop

The Australian Computing Academy (ACA) is delivering a Commonwealth funded project developing resources that will be freely available to students and teachers across Australia to learn about programming and related concepts in Digital Technologies.

This workshop helps teachers better understand the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies, and introduces freely available resources for use in the classroom.

Mustangs FC Cast Q&A Webinar

Mustangs FC Cast Webinar for Upper Primary & Secondary Students 

On March 23 students from schools throughout Australia will have a unique opportunity to be part of a live Q&A webinar with Mustangs FC cast members Emmanuelle Mattana (Marnie), Ashleigh Marshall (Liv), Molly Broadstock (Bella) and Gemma Chua-Tran (Anusha).

Students will be able to ask questions to Emmanuelle, Ashleigh, Molly and Gemma about acting, advice they might have, and being involved in a ground-breaking series like Mustangs FC. This event is open to Years 5-9 students.

Science and Mathematics Specialist Centres

The network of six Victorian Science and Mathematics Specialist Centres engage students and teachers across the state in contemporary, experiential science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM curriculum. The Centres’ programs are available to all Victorian students and their teachers, whether it be an on-site visit to the Centres, or participating in a virtual program, or having Centre staff coming out and visiting schools through the outreach programs. The Centres are for all Victorian students from Prep–12 with priority given to rural/regional and disadvantaged schools.


The Centres regularly run professional learning. The following programs are currently available:

Professional Leaning at VSSEC 

Professional Learning at Ecolinc – contact Linda Flynn, Director, flynn.linda.e@edumail.vic.gov.au, to register your interest.

‘Hands on STEM’

Date:                     Thursday 13th March / Wed 14th March

Venue:                 Ecolinc, 17-23 Labilliere St, Bacchus Marsh

Audience:           Primary Teachers

Intent:                  This PD day is for Primary Teachers and will involve a keynote and a range of workshops designed to provide teachers with ‘hands on’ activities that they can take back and implement in their classrooms.  We will also have a couple of primary schools that will showcase good practise examples. The aim of the day is to improve teacher STEM knowledge and practice.http://www.ecolinc.vic.edu.au/pdtraining


‘Using Science to teach Maths’. 

Date:                     Wed 23rd May

Venue:                 Ecolinc, 17-23 Labilliere St, Bacchus Marsh

Audience:           Primary & Lower Secondary Teachers.

Intent:                  This day is geared to Primary and lower Secondary Teachers and looks at a cross curricular approach. The day will follow a similar format with a keynote and workshops.  The idea behind this is to use science and scientific concepts to teach mathematics skills.


Environment & Sustainability Symposium

Date:                     Monday 18th June

Audience:           Primary & Secondary Teachers

Intent:                  The Symposium will involve a range of high quality experts in the Environment & Sustainability field who will deliver keynotes and workshops. The aim is to broaden knowledge and understanding around key environmental issues that are part of the Victorian Curriculum and VCE.

Exploring STEM Education: Make it so

The Engaging STEM Education seminar series in 2018 explores how STEM education can develop literacies and capabilities in learners.

The first in a series of four seminars begins by drawing on the ‘maker movement’ as a stimulus for considering what STEM initiatives might look and feel like in practice. This panel of educators will explore the influence, history and digital technology connections and how this increasingly popular initiative in schools and education centres might provide opportunities to develop STEM literacies and capabilities in learners.

Attendees will be able to engage with a ‘pop-up’ maker space in the new Learning and Teaching building.
