  • A snapshot of the game development industry and a strong focus on the broad range of creative careers open to Victorian students
  • Stories behind successful game developers and their impact here in Victoria and internationally
  • Clear links to STEM and the latest information about the new Digital Technologies curriculum for Primary & Secondary schools, including an overview of the resources and support available to teachers.

Summit Keynote Speaker – Dr Steffen Walz Dr Steffen Walz is an Associate Professor at RMIT University and the founder–director of RMIT’s Games & Experimental Entertainment Laboratory, the GEElab. At the GEElab, an international team of researchers scrutinizes the potential (and pitfalls) of play, games and game design elements for non-entertainment purposes.steffan Steffen is inspiring and teaching the next generation of game-developers and problem solvers. Summit Workshops Workshops will be run by classroom teachers, academics and games industry experts, including from Google, Microsoft, Intel, Unity and the Game Developers Association of Australia. Areas covered will include: Minecraft, Virtual Reality & Kerbal Space Program Coding with Scratch, Unity Games Curriculum, Literacy through Game Book Adventures, Gamification & Creating Games, Microsoft TouchDevelop, Intel Galileo, Games as Text, Curriculum Links and Engaging Students through Games. iPads for Learning: online professional learning registration

The Department’s Virtual Conference Centre is providing four iPads for Learning short courses for teachers and leaders who are using iPads in their teaching and learipads3ning. Each short course will contain three sessions, with each one hour session building upon the previous session’s learning. Each course focuses on a different aspect of using iPads:

 Session One: Introduction to the iPad
 Date: Wednesday 8th October 2014
 Time: 3.45 p.m.
 Content: This session will introduce participants to the basics including; how to navigate your iPad, how to organise Apps, how to download content, and how to setup your iPad in the Settings area. Setting up Mail and Calendars will also be demonstrated as with other tips and tricks to ensure you’re on the way to using your iPad effectively.

Content: This session will introduce participants to iBooks Author the most powerful digital publishing tool available. The basics will be covered including how to lay out a book, adding text, video and images as well as saving and sharing your work. Content: This session will delve into tips and tricks and how to supply your end user with an immersive interactive experience. From using hidden pop-ups to creating colour pallets and master pages this session will look at the fundamentals of designing a truly interactive book including all of the interactive widgets contained within iBooks Author as well as the website bookry.com. This session will also include information on how to publish you book to the iTunes Book store.

Session Three: iBooks Author: Custom Widgets and iTunes U
Date: Thursday 30th October 2014
Time: 3.45 p.m.
Content: This session will focus on the software iAd Producer and Book Widgets. This software allows users to create custom interactive widgets. iAd Producer allows the user to build widgets from scratch without any coding required while Book Widgets offers a large selection of templates to follow. This session will conclude with an introduction to iTunes U and how it could be used to distribute your iBooks and other content.

These short courses will contain three sessions, with each one hour session building upon the previous session’s learning. All of the courses will be supported with materials accessible via the Department’s iTunes U campus. Each session will require access to the Virtual Conference Centre tool being used for the session; an iPad with the latest iOS installed and some sessions may require additional resources as indicated.

Andrew has designed ongoing Professional Learning programs for Primary and Secondary Schools looking to integrate technology into their teaching and learning practice. With a focus on using new digital tools to produce engaging communications Andrew facilitates a hands on approach to learning. Andrew has also produced multi-touch books for Disney Australia and the AFL Players association.Resources:

3D Printing

3D printing i3D printers 2s becoming a more widely used technology in schools, with the lowering costs and strong connections to science, engineering and maths.  Quantum Victoria is taking the lead in this area and offers cutting edge professional development and student programs to guide both teachers and students through the process of using the device.  From building to using 3D printers; students and staff develop a deeper understanding of 3D modelling and printing.

Quantum Victoria was established by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.  With a diverse team comprising of highly skilled teachers and education support staff Quantum offers workshops and training which is innovative and tailored to enhance access and learning with technology.

On March 6 and 7th Quantum Victoria held a two day professional development workshop for teachers to learn how to use a Solidoodle 3D printer, which they were then able to take away with them to install into their prospective settings.  This was made possible through a partnership grant with DEECD.   Schools were invited to participate in this initiative with the hope that they would embed this new technology across Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics within their schools.

3D printer 1 During the training teachers were guided by the highly skilled team at Quantum.  The process started with learning how to set up and calibrate the device, connect and communicate with the computer, instructing the printer what to print.  We sourced 3D models from the internet on http://www.thingiverse.com, as well as being taught how to use a range of software packages to create our own 3D models.  These included MeshMixer, OpenSCAD, SketchUP Make, and Sculptris, all of which was free to download from the internet and required various levels of skill.

It was an excellent two days of training.  All in attendance, teachers from both primary and secondary school settings, rural and metro locations, went away excited and empowered to use this device to enhance learning in their school communities.  There was rich conversation and collaboration among the participants about how the device could be used in the classroom to enhance problem solving and thinking skills and make real world connections with their students which attributed to the success of the two days.  Teachers also have an opportunity to share their ideas and lesson plans with each other through the online community established by the Quantum team.

As part of Education Week, Quantum Victoria are running Modelling and 3D Printing sessions for Years 7-9 students on 20 May. See Calendar of Free Activities for this and other events.
